Apr. 24 Devotion: Lashing Out

Lashing Out

1 Samuel 25:32-34 And David said to Abigail, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, which sent thee this day to meet me: [33] And blessed be thy advice, and blessed be thou, which hast kept me this day from coming to shed blood, and from avenging myself with mine own hand. [34] For in very deed, as the Lord God of Israel liveth, which hath kept me back from hurting thee, except thou hadst hasted and come to meet me, surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light any that pisseth against the wall.

One of the easy things to do when we get mad is to just lash out at someone or some thing. Even some of the most even tempered people can at times fly off the handle and go crazy at certain times. Have you ever been around someone when something happens to you and just as you are about to lose your mind they tell you to calm down or count to 10? How often have you then told them: “Don’t tell me to calm down! You don’t know what they did to me!” Looking back I’m pretty sure I’ve said that more than once or twice. We respond to them in that way because we give no thought to the fact that God has placed them there at that particular time in our life in order to keep us from doing something foolish. The same way God placed Abigail in David’s path. David was furious at her husband Nabal for not taking care of his young men and was ready to take vengeance into his own hands. It’s at this point that Abigail heard of this and stops David before he can carry out his plan. The Bible shows us that God can use whoever or whatever He chooses to do His work. Don’t always be quick to shut down someone when you are in a place of anger. It could be God has them there to calm you down. Acting out in anger can cause us to say or do things that can have grave consequences that we aren’t thinking about in the moment. We could do bodily harm that could land us in a lot of trouble. We could say something that could ruin a lifelong friendship. Just be careful before lashing out, and if someone is there trying to calm you down don’t dismiss them. God could be using them to keep you from trouble.

God bless you today! Bro. Josh Richardson
