Proverbs 20:23 Divers weights are an abomination unto the LORD; and a false balance is not good.
“Divers weights” is a term that means a variation from accuracy without maintaining a proper acceptable standard. “False balance” means basically the same thing. It is a way to cheat someone and gain an unfair profit margin. It is easy to see that an unethical practice is being described in this verse but let us look a little deeper.
The Bible says that this kind of behavior is an “abomination unto the LORD.” That is the strongest language used in scripture. An abomination is a sickening disgust toward an attitude or action. We may view this “false balance” as no big deal but that is not God’s thought at all. It is sickeningly wicked in the eyes of God. Now, let us consider the point of this morning’s devotional thought.
God views sin as a horrible thing and most people tend to downplay the depravity. That is why we can so easily excuse away our improper attitudes and actions. We can say that putting a thumb on the scales is nothing so bad, but God says it is an abomination. We all need to view sin the way God sees it. If we did, we too would be disgusted by it. We would view it as vile and want to distance ourselves from it as far as possible.
Let us ponder these verses from Psalm 51.
Psalm 51:2-3
2 Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.
Prayer: Oh, Lord – please forgive me of those things that you have revealed to me that are sinful and cleanse me. Restore to me that wonderful relationship that I can have with you based on your marvelous grace and mercy.
