Reaction
John 12:4-5 [4] Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, which should betray him, [5] Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?
Have you ever said anything out of anger and immediately regretted it? It’s possible it wasn’t even out of anger, but you just reacted to something negatively and immediately regretted it. With what we know about Judas we know he wasn’t truly interested in selling the ointment for the poor. He was more interested in getting some of that money for himself. He reacted in the moment and thus received a response from Jesus. In each account of this Jesus responds asking why would he trouble her? She had done a good thing. Think of Peter reacting in the moment and cutting off the the right ear of Malchus. Most of these reactions are not good when people react in the moment. Today it seems to have become commonplace for people to think they have to react in the moment about something. We’ve reached a point where it seems as if anything that happens people feel like they have to react to it immediately. We feel the need to immediately give our opinion on a specific situation. This immediate reaction is too often filled with emotion. We are emotional people, and it’s those emotions that can get us in trouble at times. An immediate reaction can also lack all the facts. Think of the last 2 years. How much have people reacted to something one person might say, and not truly have all the facts. Many people reacted to someone else’s reaction to something that was based on their feelings. Once again, the emotions of something clouding the truth. I’ve seen people get so angry and ruin friendships over reacting immediately to something that is said or has taken place. Instead of always reacting what if we just stepped away sometimes. There may be times when we need to react to something, however there are many times it would do us good to just step back and think on the situation a bit. Psalm 46:10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.
Our willingness to be still, and pray about a situation can go a long way to easing some headaches or heartaches that come our way by reacting to something in the moment. Before you blow up about something today: instead, take a step back, pray, seek Gods guidance, and see if that isn’t a better way to handle things.
God bless you today! Bro. Josh Richardson
