Amos 2:4-6: Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have despised the law of the LORD, and have not kept his commandments, and their lies caused them to err, after the which their fathers have walked:
5 But I will send a fire upon Judah, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem.
6 Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they sold the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of shoes;
In chapter 1, God reveals how He will judge the nations surrounding Israel for their treatment of God’s people.
Here, we find His pronouncement of judgement on His people for how they’ve treated Him!
*they…
A. Rejected His Word -v. 4a
B. Refused to Obey -v. 4b
C. Replaced Righteousness with Pleasures -v. 6
**they had become Apostate! (tolerant to and accepting sin)
-in…
A. Civic Matters! (governmental affairs)
B. Cultural Matters! (abortion & homosexual agendas)
C. Church Matters! (social gospels, false doctrines, and contemporary movements in worship and music)
***This mindset is filtering into our churches and a tolerance for worldliness is becoming the norm.
*Apostasy in the Church!
*churches are becoming apostate toward God by being…
1. Casual!
*in…
a. Attendance! (convenience) (very slack!!)
b. Attitude!
c. Attire! (worldly dress)
d. Aspirations! (desire for God!)
e. Application! (refusal to change)
2. Crass! (unashamed!)
3. Complacent! (unmotivated)
4. Critical! (of efforts to break apostasy)
5. Carnal! (sinful)
We’ve reached a point that most preachers don’t preach against sin, sinful practices, and sinful mindsets. When some do, they are often ridiculed as being old fashioned, ignored, or replaced. May God help us to shun worldliness and run from apostasy!
