Feb 8 Devotion: God is God

Jeremiah 1:5 Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

This verse declares somethings to us that need to be restated in a world that has strayed away from God.

  1. God is the giver of life. He “formed” Jeremiah in the womb of his mother.

  2. God knows everything about everyone. There are no exceptions. He knew Jeremiah as Jeremiah before he was even conceived.

  3. God had a plan for Jeremiah even before he was born.

  4. God never refers to Jeremiah as an “it” because he was formed in the womb as a person.

  5. To sanctify means to appoint to a certain task or office by making the necessary preparations and meeting the requirements for service. God’s desire for Jeremiah was for him to be a prophet and he set him apart to fulfill that office.

  6. Being “ordained” in this verse is to have a divine appointment from God to be a prophet. A prophet was a spokesman for God that declared divinely revealed truth to the people. Their declarations of prophecy would always be accurate because it was given to them by the all-knowing God.

With these above statements being true, they declare the majesty and power of God. He is Almighty, all-powerful, and all-knowing. People may choose to reject or ignore God, but he is still God. You cannot explain him away or hope to overcome his majesty and power. He sits on the throne as Sovereign of all and he relinquishes his throne to no one.

Psalm 95:6 O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker.
