Romans 12:10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring
one another;
A personal preference is something that you choose for yourself to be esteemed as
more important. If it is personal, then the choice has been made by you and if it is a
preference, then you have deemed it to be a high priority. The truth is, we all have personal
preferences about many things and those preferences determine our decision making and our actions.
This verse, in Romans 12, tells us that we should “be kindly affectioned,” show
“brotherly love,” and with honorable intentions prefer “one another” above ourselves. This is
a Christian, spiritual, biblical approach to the way we should live. Walking with the Lord is
never a selfish walk and representing him in this present world is never to be for self-gain. To
have our priorities right, we must put our relationship with Jesus Christ first in our lives and
our relationship with those around us above ourselves. This preference of proper order has
been illustrated by the anacronym: Jesus Others You.
Real joy comes from having the same priorities that God has. Real joy comes from
placing the same importance on the things that God says should be important to us. Aligning
ourselves with the God who made us and redeemed us puts things in proper order. Of course, this is a contrary way of living from the “get all you can for yourself” philosophy of the world but remember that the world is at enmity (a malicious hatred) with God so, their philosophy will be against the ways of God. Let us live our lives with eternal spiritual values and let us not forget the admonition of Philippians 2:3, “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.”
