Needful
Luke 10:41-42
And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: [42] But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
This week I heard comedian Jeff Allan tell a story about his son. His son told him he needed a pair of gym shoes that cost $100. Mr. Allan’s first response was that no he didn’t “need” $100 gym shoes but that he wanted $100 gym shoes. The dad then told him he had $40 for gym shoes which meant the son needed $60.
What do you consider needful? Sure, we need certain things to survive, but outside of that, what do you consider needful? Just like this comedians son we tend to classify a lot of wants as needs. How many times have you also told your spouse or parent that you just really needed something that was truly just something you wanted? How needful do we consider the things of God? Are we closer to Martha or Mary? We can even get caught up in things that we view as important all the while not finding time for the Lord as we need to. We need that time with Him due to our flesh as well as the world we live in. When we don’t spend the time with Him like we need to we can find it easier and easier to venture further away from Him. Skip a Bible reading once or twice and then see how easy it is the next time to just skip it. Lay out of church a couple times a month and it becomes very easy to find other things to occupy our time and stop going completely. Just as Mary did, we need to realize that we need that time with the Lord as well. Do you look at the time with the Lord in your life as needful or just when you can work it in?
God bless you today!
