Jan. 9 Devotion: Proving

Proving

Genesis 22:12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.

There is so much we can take out of what went on here in Abrahams life. As I was doing some reading this week verse 12 just really stuck out and spoke to me. Abraham had done everything that was spoken to him. We see him now with knife in hand and in position to slay Isaac. Just think of the faith it took to get to this point. It’s one thing to gather everything together, venture up the mountain, and even preparing the altar. However, now he’s in position to sacrifice his son. We then see the angel of the Lord call out to him here in verse 12. He says “now I know that thou fearest God.” I’d say he’d proven not only his fear of the Lord but also his love and faith in God. To what extent do we prove those things to God today? You hear so many express how much they love the Lord supposedly. How hard is it though to find them at each service? We hear so many claim how important Christ is in their life, but will not hesitate to skip a service when something else comes up. How confident are you in going to them to ask them to pray for you? How trusting are you with sharing something with them in confidence? It’s easy to use words and say something, but as the old saying goes: the proofs in the pudding. Think for a moment about your significant other or any children you may have. How often do you do things for them just because you love them? How often do you try to plan out things to do just to spend time with them? Look at the effort we will put into things to show those around us how much we love them or how much they mean to us. Do we put forth that same effort when it comes to our Saviour? How good are we at proving how important Christ is to us? We’ve heard this before: If you were on trial today for being a Christian would there be enough proof to prove it? Is there proof out there that you love the Lord?

God bless you today! Bro. Josh Richardson
