Jun 19 Devotion: Bare Minimum Christians

Philemon 1:21 “Having confidence in thy obedience I wrote unto thee, knowing that thou wilt also do more than I say.”

The apostle Paul knew the devotion that Philemon had in regards to the faith. He knew that if he asked or instructed Philemon in any way that Philemon would go above and beyond to ensure that the ministry would not suffer.

Sadly, most Christians do not share this determination to go the extra mile when receiving direction from the Lord. They may be faithful, they may make themselves available for the ministry, but they purpose within themselves that they will do no more than the bare minimum to make sure the job gets done.

We know that God will not use an unfaithful servant. God will not use someone that is unreliable. In that same vein of reasoning: if God was presented with two Christians that were willing to do something for His glory, would he choose the Christian like Philemon or the other that will only do the bare minimum?

I find it no coincidence that the majority of the work around God’s house is done by a minority of people. Many may be willing to labor, but there are always fewer that are willing to “also do more.”

Think of the blessings, the friendships, the fellowship, and the chances to see God’s glory manifest that the bare minimum Christian misses out on. If they wonder why others seem to receive more from the things of God, the answer is because God can trust them to give their all when called upon.

Bare minimum Christians receive the minimum rewards, have minimal joy, and are spiritually emaciated compared to to those like Philemon.

If you only make room for the “bare minimum” it’s because you have a desire to spend the rest of your time with things outside of the Lord. So you see, THERE IS NO BARE MINIMUM with God! It is all for him, or all for the carnal man.

Your fellowservant in Christ,
