June 17 Devotion: Abound

Abound

2 Peter 1:5-8 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; [6] And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; [7] And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. [8] For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

One of the easiest things to do is to just spew out words. You can find plenty of people who will just sit on a computer and spew hate or falseness all day. We have people that will sit behind a news desk and do the same thing. People will also just say anything they want to someone else if they think it will help them get ahead or find favor with someone. People will also blatantly lie to someone else’s face just to get them off their back, or to make themselves look better. However, when it comes to making us look better then things should show. I could tell you I’m a decent golfer. If every time you played with me I played terribly you would not believe me. If I have the ability in me to hit good golf shots then at some point it should show. If I’ve put in the practice time then there should be enough good golf in me that it should show out more often. Think of our text verses along those lines. You look at all the things mentioned in verses 5-7, we get to verse 8 and we see Peter not just say that if these things be in you, but also that they abound. There are many ways to define abound. One is to exist in large amounts. It can also be said to be plentiful, abundant, even thrive or flourish. It’s not just someone saying they have brotherly kindness, patience, charity, etc. These things should abound in us. If they abound in us then they will show out. While it might not be as prevalent as it used to be you will still find plenty of people who claim to be Christian. A Christian should be Christ like. Being Christ like means these things will abound in our life! When these things abound then people can’t help but look at us and see something different than what this world has to offer. Faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness, charity. Do you just say these things exist in your life or do they truly abound?

God bless you today! Bro. Josh Richardson
