June 27 Devotion: Yielding to the Lord

1 Samuel 24:9-12

9 And David said to Saul, Wherefore hearest thou men's words, saying, Behold, David seeketh thy hurt?

10 Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and some bade me kill thee: but mine eye spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth mine hand against my lord; for he is the LORD'S anointed.

11 Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in mine hand, and I have not sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it.

12 The LORD judge between me and thee, and the LORD avenge me of thee: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.

David had a problem, and his name was Saul. Saul was the anointed king of Israel who was jealous of David and was trying to kill him. In the above verses we see that David had an opportunity to get rid of his problem. Saul did not know that David was in a cave with him and could have been easily killed by David, but David showed a godly character and chose to do something that we all should take note of. David yielded to God instead of taking matters into his own hands. David refused to violate the command not to touch the LORD’s anointed. God’s truth won out over the circumstances. David trusted God more than he trusted himself.

Situation ethics is the belief that we can be justified in doing anything we like if the situation dictates that something can be done to turn a situation in our favor. Many live by this belief. David did not practice situation ethics in this story. (I say in this story because David was not perfect and did not always choose the right way.) By yielding himself to the truth of God’s word instead of deciding to do what would seem to be expedient, he showed the proper way for us all to live. As it has been said many times, it is always right to do right so, just do right. Yielding ourselves to God first and foremost should be the way we make our decisions and put in practice that which God has said. David said, “the LORD judge” and “the LORD avenge”. Let God do in your life what he needs to do and let us all learn to take our hands off the situations. Yield to the Lord and he will guide you in the way you ought to go.
