June 30 Devotion: Asking For Help

Exodus 18:14,17-18 And when Moses’ father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even? [17] And Moses’ father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good. [18] Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.

We find Moses here trying to do everything on his own. If you read verse 13 it says he sat to judge the people from morning till evening. His father in law Jethro begins then to tell him that this isn’t good for him to do everything alone. He tells him in verse 18 that he is going to wear away and that he can not perform it alone. How often do we try to go at things all alone instead of seeking help. I’m sure all of us can have the attitude that if we want something done right it’s easier to just do it on our own. We can find it hard to turn something over to someone and trust that they will do it right. Maybe you just have control issues. It’s possible that you just want to feel in control of everything. I had a conversation at work this week with someone who made the comment that they can be too proud to ask for help. So are you just too proud to ask? There are times that we need to just do things on our own. However, there are also times that we must recognize that we can’t do everything on our own. God will place people in our lives that we can lean on to help us. It could be you need help with certain tasks, or taking something from you long term. You might even need some kind of financial assistance. We need to pray when we begin to get bogged down and seek His guidance on who we may be able to lean on for help. If you’ll read the rest of Exodus 18 you’ll find the advice Jethro gave Moses, how Moses followed it, and how it helped him. There are people around us we can rely on, but it’s up to us to use them.

God bless you today! Bro. Josh Richardson
