Are You All Upside?
1 Samuel 10:9-11 And it was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass that day. [10] And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them. [11] And it came to pass, when all that knew him beforetime saw that, behold, he prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that is come unto the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?
We know that Israel demanded a king. Just before our text verses we find Samuel telling Saul that the Spirit of the Lord will come upon him and he will prophesy. Now we find Saul has come across those that know him and they are amazed at what Saul told them. Even asking in verse 11 is Saul a prophet? We see Saul is a different person than what his friends had known him to be. Saul had the Spirit of the Lord on his life so he had the opportunity to do great and wonderful things for God. He had tremendous upside so to speak. Unfortunately though as his power grew so did his pride. All the way to the point that the Spirit left him. 1 Samuel 16:14 But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him. Now when we think of great kings we think of David and not Saul. Yet, Saul had the opportunity to succeed as well. We can say Saul had plenty of upside. Saul had upside that was never realized? Can the same thing be said about our lives? Does our lack of prayer or study lead to unrealized potential in our lives? Does our fear of the unknown lead to us not going all in for God? There are so many athletes in the world that people look at and say they had so much potential, but just wouldn’t put in the work to be the best they could be. Can God look at us and say the same thing? What great things could we accomplish for and through God if we were just willing to put in the work so to speak and devote ourselves fully to Him? Are you living the life God wants you to live or are you just full of upside?
God bless you today! Bro. Josh Richardson
