Ruth 2:5-6 “5-Then said Boaz unto his servant that was set over the reapers, Whose damsel is this? 6-And the servant that was set over the reapers answered and said, It is the Moabitish damsel that came back with Naomi out of the country of Moab:”
Of the many allusions that this story has to Christ becoming the kinsman-redeemer you the sinful gentile, I find this passage to hold one of the more subtitle parallels. Who is it that introduces Ruth to Boaz? A stranger. We know not his name, where he came from, where he went afterward, or what he did for his Master Boaz. We know not how he came to know of Ruth, only that he did know her name and her history.
It is likely that Ruth never knew that this conversation took place. She may not have even known that the servant was aware of her identity. Yet the stranger knew everything about her.
We too, lost in sin and ignorant of God, had a stranger that knew all about us. The Holy Ghost knew who we were, where we came from, and what we were in need of. While we had no knowledge of Him, He knew every detail of our heart. Then, at the will of the Father, He drew us to the Lord Jesus Christ that the Savior might redeem us.
When we were lost we knew nothing of the Lord as we were strangers to Him in sin. Then, in love, He sought us out and came to us when we could not come to Him. Yet, now as saints, we have a friendship that is stronger than any other through the Spirit that was once a stranger to us.
Your fellowservant in Christ,
