May 16 Devotion: Come and See

John 1:45-46 45 Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.46 And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.

We notice here that Nathanael did something that is very common. He had his mind made up based on a preconceived idea. He thought Nazareth had a bad reputation and based his opinion about anyone from there on that preconceived idea. There may have been some scoundrels that lived in Nazareth, but did that automatically put everyone in the same category as them that was from there? Just because someone did something wrong does not mean that everyone did the same thing. Nathanael made up his mind with unreliable information.

Philip gave him an alternative approach to the preconceived idea. He said, "Come and see." Instead of making up your mind based on hearsay and rumor, come and experience for yourself who Jesus really is. There have certainly been some that have claimed to represent Jesus that have not represented him well and have brought a reproach upon his name, but don't blame Jesus for their actions. "Come and see" Jesus for yourself.

Psalm 34:8 O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.
