May 17 Devotion: Can A Negative Be A Positive?

Can A Negative Be A Positive?

John 4:29

Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?

Hard truths? Sometimes the truth hurts. Just a couple statements I’m sure that we’ve all heard before. It’s also some things that we don’t necessarily like. There are times that we have to be told the truth even if it does hurt. There are too many times that we consider this a negative. What if that hard truth or hard preaching causes us to wake up and get things straightened out. That hard preaching should cause us to get right with God. Think of the woman that’s making this statement here in our text verse. This woman was out getting water outside of when this would typically be done. This can give us a little insight into her life. We then knows what Jesus says to her in verses 16-18:

John 4:16-18

Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither. [17] The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband: [18] For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.

Jesus calls her out! She should get mad, give excuse, pout, run off, etc. These are any and all of the things we tend to do when the truth hurts so to speak. However, she stays and continues the conversation. We see her run only when we get to our text verse. That running is to go and tell others, and invite them to see the Lord. Think of the statement here. “Told me all things.” I don’t believe many of those things were pleasant to hear. Yet, she took those negative things revealed and used it as an opportunity to get right and tell others. We know that many then believed from hearing her as well as the Lord.

John 4:39,41

And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did. [41] And many more believed because of his own word;

Instead of being offended by so called hard preaching we need to hear it, apply it to our lives, get things right, and let others know about a loving Savior!

God bless you today!
