Nov. 1 Devotion: Showing Grace

Showing Grace

Matthew 5:38-44 [38] Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: [39] But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. [40] And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also. [41] And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. [42] Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. [43] Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. [44] But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

Just my opinion, but I think this is a passage of Scripture we would rather just pass over. We aren’t interested in turning the other cheek. If someone does something to us we are more interested in retaliation than we are in following what Scripture says. Love my enemies? Absolutely not we think. Most definitely we aren’t going to bless them or pray for them. We would prefer to live by an eye for an eye or a tooth for a tooth. Why though do we think or live that way? We should be thankful the Lord isn’t that way! Think of how we’ve done Him wrong. Do we need reminded of what He went through on the way to the cross, and on the cross. He continually shows us grace and mercy. Our mindset is that if someone calls us an awful name we are ready to punch them in the mouth. However, we blow off a church service for whatever reason we come up with (I’m not talking about being truthfully providentially hindered) and just think Jesus should accept and understand it. We hear someone has said something about us, so then we want to spread things about them. Wonder what would happen if Jesus was to share in public what’s in our heart and minds at times? Scripture tells us something about vengeance and who’s it is: Hebrews 10:30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. Instead of seeking our own vengeance and retaliation, what if we showed others the same grace and mercy that Christ shows us?

God bless you today! Bro. Josh Richardson
