Nov 21 Devotion: Doing Right

2 Chronicles 14:2 And Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God:

This may be overly simple, but it does not make it any less profound. We should choose to do right according to the teaching of the word of God. Doing what is right in the eyes of the LORD will bring a quiet and peaceful spirit within. It brings honor to the Lord and is a testimony to the goodness of our God. Doing right in a wicked world is more difficult than just saying so, but it can be done. Asa proved it in a time of idolatry and rebellion.

When the nation of Israel was divided into two kingdoms, after the reign of Solomon, an interesting series of events took place. The northern kingdom (Israel) never had a good king. They had 19 during this divided time and there were no good ones. The northern kingdom was eventually overcome by the Assyrians. The southern kingdom (Judah) had 20 kings and there were a few good ones along the way, Asa being one of them. (Asa was not perfect in his reign but he did some good things.) He lived in a time when idolatry and rebellion against God took place. It needed to be dealt with, and Asa made a stand against the wicked trends of his day. Asa is an example for us to follow. Do what is right even if it is unpopular and even if you feel you are standing alone. If you’re doing right, you’ll never be alone for our God is always on the side of what is right.
