Nov. 4 Devotion: Mocking Jesus

Mocking Jesus

Matthew 27:27-31 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers. [28] And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe. [29] And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! [30] And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head. [31] And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.

This is a very upsetting portion of Scripture. Pilate has just had all the people tell him that Jesus’s blood shall be upon their hands and they demand that Barabbas be released. Barabbas has been released and we see the beginning of Jesus traveling to Calvary. The soldiers have taken Jesus into the common hall and begin to humiliate Him. We see they strip Him, put a robe on Him, platted a crown of thorns on His head. They then begin to spit on Him and mock Him. When you look at that word mock it means to tease or laugh at in a scornful matter. You’ll also find it’s an act of ridicule or derision. We can get caught up in that with people around us. We might tease them, but I’ve also seen people poke fun at or laugh at someone they felt couldn’t do anything to them in return. I’ve even heard someone say to someone else in a laughing or threatening manner: “what are you gonna do about it?” I’ve heard people in authority use it to describe employees. When they won’t follow directions they are just mocking them I’ve heard them say. They are just throwing it up in their face that they will do what they want and see what happens. Almost like they are just teasing them to do something to them. The employee seems to act like they are irreplaceable. How often do we treat God in that same manner? He sent His Son to go through this horrible crucifixion just for us to disobey His Word? Jesus took the mocking and beating just for us act like we can just do what we want with no regard to His Word? I’ve heard people say this: “ If I’m lying then God can strike me dead.” They say this knowing full well they are lying, but don’t believe God would truly strike them dead at that instant. When we blatantly disobey God and disregard what He has for our lives we are just telling him that we know best and there is nothing He is going to do about it. I think we fail to realize that God can most certainly cut off our life in the next instant. We might know we will face eternity at some point, but we just don’t believe it could be now. Are you just mocking God today? Are you living your life your way without any regard for the consequences of that and not giving a thought for all that He went through because He loves you?

God bless you today! Bro. Josh Richardson
