Oct. 14 Devotion: The Potter

The Potter

Jeremiah 18:1-6

The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying, [2] Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words. [3] Then I went down to the potter's house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels. [4] And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it. [5] Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying, [6] O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.

The potter is the one that goes out into the world and finds the clay, and when he finds it he separates it from all the things that is attached to the clay. He will then bring the clay back to his own house. The potter is the one that knows what type of vessel this clay will be made into. Once this is determined he will place the clay on the wheel and begin to mold the clay into something that is useful. He will pour water on the clay that will cause it to become soft enough so he can mold it without destroying it, and when he is done there will be a vessel that will bring glory to God. This is a great picture of salvation. God goes out into this dark world and searches until he finds that one who is lost and God saves him and brings him back home. God is the one who determines what a person will be, not the person himself. We have this mentality that doing something big for God is the will of God. If you do what the will of God is for you that is a vessel that will bring glory to God. God gives us the Holy Spirit which is pictured by water. The Holy Spirit will soften our hearts and guide us. Ephesians 2.10 for we are his Workmanship created in Christ Jesus unto good works.

God bless
