Oct. 2 Devotion: Life Comes At You Fast

Life Comes At You Fast

1 Kings 19:1-4

And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword. [2] Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to morrow about this time. [3] And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beer–sheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there. [4] But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.

I’m not saying this is all young people, nor am I saying this is something that is confined to the younger generation. However, it does seem like the younger generation really struggles when things happen in their lives. A lot of adults can struggle with this as well. We know bad things are gonna happen. Job tells us this as well: Job 14:1 Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble. There are a variety of things that can go wrong at anytime in our lives. Many times this can and will happen right after something great has happened or we really feel like life is going good. Think of how Elijah had just slained the prophets of Baal and here he is now wishing himself dead after hearing a message from Jezebel. However, I think if we read on we can find some things that can help us get through some of the most difficult times we may have.

  1. Look for spiritual guidance 1 Kings 19:5 And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat. We aren’t going to have an angel come and wake us up, but there are people who God can place in our lives that can help us in the darkest of circumstances. Too often we will look to things of the world instead of turning to people in our church family who can help us.

  2. Lean on that help 1 Kings 19:7-8 And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee. [8] And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God. How many times we ask for advice and then not take it or fail to do what is said? Elijah went forty days and nights on the strength of this meat. We have no idea what things we can face and get through when we lean on the Godly advice we get from others.

  3. Listen to God! 1 Kings 19:12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. Elijah had felt all alone and God let’s him know a little later he had seven thousand in Israel who had not bowed to Baal. Listen to what God has for you. Listen to what He can give you through Scripture. Listen to Him in prayer. Listen to what God has to say! Bad things are going to happen. How we react to them not only determines our attitude, but it also can show the world just how great a God we serve. When it looks like to the world that everything around you is falling apart, yet you’re still praising God!! That can truly help people see what God can truly do for someone who has put their complete faith ans trust in Him!!

God bless you today! Bro. Josh Richardson
