Oct. 25 Devotion: Straightway

Straightway

Matthew 14:27

But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.

In our text verse we find the disciples out at sea in a ship in the fourth watch of the night the Bible says in the verses prior. They see something walking on the water and are troubled until we find Jesus speaking to them here in our text verse. I want to focus on that word straightway. You find that word over 40 times in your Bible. Over 20 of those times you’ll find it in the four Gospels. These mentions all deal in some form or fashion with Jesus. Straightway simply means immediately, or without loss of time. You’ll find several spots where Jesus did something immediately like we find here in our text. Other places you’ll find how immediately someone his healed or immediately nets were left and Jesus was followed. We live in such a “fast food” society where we expect everything immediately yet how often do we practice that same urgency? How many times do we procrastinate in something and just worry about it later? Some instances it’s really not that big of a deal. We can put off mowing the yard, straightening the house, etc. The problem comes that we then see the lack of urgency in everything. Has God ever laid someone on your heart to send them a text and you think you’ll get to it later only to forget later? How many have lost friends or loved ones that they meant to tell them how important they were to them, but lost the opportunity.

We are running out of time. Hopefully we begin to see the sense of urgency and straightway do what God leads us to do and not wait until a tomorrow that may never come.

God bless you today!
