Oct. 28 Devotion: Bullied Into Silence

Bullied Into Silence

Luke 18:36-39 And hearing the multitude pass by, he asked what it meant. [37] And they told him, that Jesus of Nazareth passeth by. [38] And he cried, saying, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me. [39] And they which went before rebuked him, that he should hold his peace: but he cried so much the more, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me.

We could sit down and have a discussion about several topics that we would disagree on. Best tv show, best restaurant, best athlete, etc. In the grand scheme of things none of these are that important that it should lead to an argument. However, some people get so passionate about some frivolous things that they just won’t stop. That type of situation is what will usually lead me to just stop and walk away. In some peoples mind I guess that’s just letting them win so to speak. Think of our text verses. Jesus is coming to Jericho and a blind man is there. This blind man has heard of Jesus and immediately cries out to him in verse 38. Then we see those around him try to shut him up. However, this man wasn’t going to allow them to keep him quiet because he knew what Jesus could do for him so he cried out even more. This man wasn’t worried what others thought of him. He wasn’t concerned if they were going to stop being his friend. He wasn’t worried about being “cancelled.” He knew what Jesus could do! Why then are we a people that seem so easily to be bullied into silence? The world wants to stand up and say what’s wrong is right. Christians then want to stand and say: no! Wrong is still wrong. Then when they shout back we seem to just cowher and walk away. Things of this world aren’t worth arguing about to the point of truly arguing. However, the truth is worth standing up for. We seem to be more concerned about what this world might do to us than standing for God’s truths. Romans 8:31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

Are we going to continue to allow the world to silence us? The blind man knew it was worth ignoring those around him to get to Jesus. Do we believe the truth is worth standing for?

God bless you today! Bro. Josh Richardson
