We’re not astonished
Mark 5:42
And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment.
We know the story here of how Jairus goes to get Jesus so he can heal his daughter. While away he gets word his daughter has died. When Jesus shows up we know those there laughed at Him when He said she was not dead, but sleepeth. Jesus then takes mother and father into the girl, takes her by the hand, and tells her to arise. That brings us to our text verse where she immediately arose and walked and that left them astonished. The word astonished is defined by this: Amazed; confounded with fear, surprise, or admiration.
We seem to no longer be amazed at the things of God. Think of how God showed up in our service last Sunday morning. Were we amazed or astonished that He would bless us with His presence or did we come just taking for granted He’d be there? I think we all would say we desire His presence, but when He does show up like that what’s our attitude towards it? Are we amazed that despite our shortcomings He shows up and blessed us? Are you one who thinks that He always shows up like it’s some kind of obligation he has towards us?
The Lord don’t owe us anything. If He never blesses us again we all can say He’s been far better to us than we are to Him! Somewhere along the line I’m afraid we’ve reached a point that we just expect God to show up and do something for us rather that be astonished that an all Holy God would even give us the time of day!
God bless you today!
