Oct 5 Devotion: Laboring For Jesus

Laboring For Jesus

2 Thessalonians 3:6-11

[6] Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received of us. [7] For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among you; [8] Neither did we eat any man’s bread for nought; but wrought with labour and travail night and day, that we might not be chargeable to any of you: [9] Not because we have not power, but to make ourselves an ensample unto you to follow us. [10] For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. [11] For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.

Here we see Paul talking to the church Thessalonica about how they did not want to be a burden to the people. Instead they labored so that they could not be found chargeable by any of the people. We hear verse 10 referred to in this passage very often.

If we shouldn’t expect to eat if we don’t work, why then should we expect to feast at the House of God if we don’t labor for Him? Laboring for God is not strictly the pastors job. Laboring doesn’t mean studying for a message or a Sunday school class. Laboring for God can be things as simple as cleaning around the church, going out of visitation, or even just simply praying for services. However, too often we show up for service simply expecting God to feed us when we’ve given him no thought throughout the rest of the week. I understand that we all have busy lives. That is no excuse though to place God on a back burner and not be willing to labor in His name. The Bible teaches that those things we do for Him are not in vain, and we take for granted how often God blesses and helps us when we are so undeserving!!

There are many things we may do in a day that we regret. Laboring for God is not one of them!!

God bless you today!
