Wooden Pews
Revelation 3:17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
We all know the verse here written to the church of Laodicea. How close are we individually to that verse? Not as a church on the whole, but you as a person. One of the things I remember about where I went to church growing up was that as a young boy and teenager I always wanted to sit in the back. I’m not sure why because in the back was wooden pews on each side. They were so uncomfortable to sit in for any amount of time. Now we go to church with all the comforts of home. We can get the thermostat sit on a temperature at least close to what we like, sit on nice padded pews, and many other things that just allow us to be comfortable. It seems that we’ve even reached a point where if the preacher is preaching on something we don’t like, then we can just tune him out. When was the last time you sat in a church service and was uncomfortable? It should make us uncomfortable if we don’t see visitors coming in. It should make us uncomfortable to know that sinners left without being saved. However, it seems that we’ve become so content with our own lives that we don’t give it a second thought. We know we are saved, have food on our table and clothes on our back so what more do we need. Church seems to just be part of our normal routine. Just something we do on a Sunday and or Wednesday. What if we was to come in the next time and the AC or heat didn’t work? What if the pews had been replaced with those old wooden pews, and maybe even the bathrooms were out of service? Would your love of God, and concern for souls keep bringing you back, or would those lack of comforts drive you to stay home because those pews are just too hard on me, or it’s just too hot or cold in there anymore. Let us not allow church to be routine! Let in not be something we do just because we are comfortable in it. Instead let’s treat it like the sacred and holy thing that it is, and realize how fortunate we are to even get to go!!
God bless you today! Bro. Josh Richardson
