Sept. 11 Devotion: The Real Old Paths

The Real Old Paths

Jeremiah 6:16 Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.

I would say that when we read this verse most think of old paths as 100 years ago or even more. Even if we weren’t alive then we think of the stories we hear about revival and we long to get back to those days. Do you remember this date 22 years ago? I remember my mother-in-law calling me and waking me up to tell me planes had flown into a building in New York. I turned on tv just after the second plane had hit the other tower. I remember just being glued to the tv all day infill I had to leave for work. Not knowing what was going to happen next. What did this all mean? Were we headed for WWIII? I also remember the patriotism that was shown afterwards. People wanted these terrorists organizations held accountable. You’d see flags and chants of USA all over. People also seemed to return to church in droves. People were seeking God and seeking answers. Many thought this might truly be the end. I’ve heard people say before how they’d like to go back to then when so many were in church. What they then fail to realize was how short lived that really was. Most places were really back to normal within a few weeks. I don’t recall any true revivals breaking out. We don’t need to get back to a time that was a short lived return due to fear. We need to get back to the old paths and a time when people truly loved God and had a reverential fear of the Lord! Do you catch yourself going through the motions today or truly longing for revival?

God bless you today! Bro. Josh Richardson
