Zechariah 4:6 Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.
There is a great task that is laid out before us. We that are saved have a cause that we must be dedicated to if we are to be successful in implementing God’s plan. I have found that often we are busy, but our busyness has roots in our own agenda, opinions, and strength. We understand there is a need, but we attempt to fulfill that need with our own way of doing things. This may sometimes work in secular, material endeavors but not in spiritual matters. Doing the work of the Lord cannot be done through flesh driven incentives or enablement. If we are going to do God’s work, it must be done God’s way through God’s power.
We may think it will take an army (the word “might” in the text) or great power (which denotes human strength or ability) to accomplish the task. But God refutes that approach and says it must come through him, through his spirit, through his equipping us. It is through the Holy Spirit that God sends out this spiritual enabling. He shows us and directs us through his spiritual power. Only through him can we do what we need to do. This simple teaching is so contrary to our way of thinking because we tend to think too highly of our talents and abilities, our plans and opinions.
I have heard it said that if you trust in intelligence, then you will get what intelligence can do. If you trust in education, then you will get what education can do. If you trust in money, then you will get what riches can do. But if you will trust in God, you can get what God can do. Only through God can we be of any eternal spiritual value in this world. Let us trust him. Let us allow him to fill us with his Spirit and operate our lives in that spirit of reliance upon God and his power.
There is much to do. So, how can we do it? It will not be through our might and power, but it must be by his spirit. Be humble, be submissive, and allow God to work through you. There are eternal dividends found in submission to him.
2 Peter 1:1-4
1 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:
2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
