Sept. 15 Devotion: Good Preaching

Good Preaching?

Titus 1:3 But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;

It was mentioned last week about all the preaching you can find nowadays. We know the Bible doesn’t tell us there will be a lack of preaching these days but a lack of hearing: Amos 8:11 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD: We know if you want to find preaching you can find it. Unfortunately, there’s only a certain kind that too many will seek out: 2 Timothy 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; If we seek preaching online or on the radio what should we be looking for? Here are some things that good preaching should include. Keep these things in mind, especially if you are listening to someone new. Scriptural- good preaching should come from and be grounded in the Scriptures. Preaching shouldn’t be about man’s opinion on something. It should be based on what God says in His Word. Saviour- good preaching should point others to Christ. Every message isn’t going to be about salvation or salvation based. However, if a man is promoting himself or something besides Christ in all his preaching then I’d stay away from it. Searching- good preaching should cause us to search or examine ourselves. I truly believe God has something for us in each message He gives the man of God for us. It could be convicting, preparing us for a future storm, giving some type of answer, etc. Regardless of what it is there will be something in there for you. We can all have our favorite preachers. If you love preaching you can also go looking for other preaching. However, we must be careful in what we are listening to. Don’t give time to anything not based in truth. Listening to something not grounded in Scripture can get into our minds and get us to start questioning things when we aren’t careful. Listening to preaching is good, just make sure it’s good preaching.

God bless you today! Bro. Josh Richardson
