Sept. 17 Devotion: Forgetting God

Forgetting God

Deuteronomy 8:7-11 [7] For the Lord thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills; [8] A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of oil olive, and honey; [9] A land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness, thou shalt not lack any thing in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig brass. [10] When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the Lord thy God for the good land which he hath given thee. [11] Beware that thou forget not the Lord thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day:

If you was to watch a NASCAR race the one thing you will see when it gets to the end of the race, is no matter what question a driver is asked in the winners circle, the first thing they always seem to do is do you thank their sponsors. They know the ones who are behind them that helped get them to where they are at that moment. That is something you will see a lot in sports. Especially individual sports who have sponsorships that help them achieve their goals. We often look at Israel in Scripture and wonder how they seem to so easily forget about God. God brings them through something and it seemed like the next thing they would do is murmur against God and lack faith. You read our text verses here and think how could they ever forget God that it warns against in vs. 11. How could you be that blessed and forget God? That’s a good question for ourselves! When was last time you thanked God for waking you up? When was last time you thanked him for the intelligence He blessed you with to make it through school and have a job. When was last time you thanked Him for the ability to have clean clothes, fresh water, a warm house in winter and a cool one in the summer? We think it’s simple to just pray and say thank you God for “everything” and think that’s supposed to suffice. Yet our favorite show or sport comes on tv and we’ll forget about our devotion time. How quick do we forget God and just blow off church on a Sunday or Wednesday when something else comes up. Too often we have something go wrong and it’s then that we are thankful for how good God has been in our lives. When was last time you truly looked around at ALL God has blessed you with and been thankful for all He has done.

God bless you today! Bro. Josh Richardson
