A Great Work
Nehemiah 6:1-3 Now it came to pass, when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and Geshem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had builded the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (though at that time I had not set up the doors upon the gates;) [2] That Sanballat and Geshem sent unto me, saying, Come, let us meet together in some one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But they thought to do me mischief. [3] And I sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you?
Sanballat and Tobiah wanted to stop Nehemiah. If you read on here in chapter 6 that they continued to try to stop Nehemiah. I want to focus on two simple words in verse 3: “great work.” You might look at and ask the question: How is building a wall a great work? Anything you are doing for God is a great work. Anything we get to do for God I believe is a privilege. The opportunity to do something for the Lord after all He has done for us should be looked at as a great work. You don’t have to be a pastor or preacher to do a great work around the church. You might teach Sunday School. It doesn’t matter what age, if it’s being done for Him then it’s a great work. You might clean around the church: Doing it for Him, it’s a great work. If we are going to do a great work we need to remember a few things.
Stand fast Nehemiah 6:4 Yet they sent unto me four times after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner. There are going to be some try to get you off your post. Not all are going to like what you are doing. It’s possible even other Christians will try to trip you up. If they aren’t doing what they should they most certainly won’t want to see you doing something.
Surrender self Doing a great work means surrendering to Him. It’s not at all about us. It’s not about how I want to do it. We should do it for Him to get the glory for it and not us.
Step up Are you giving it your all? If you are doing something on your job you’ll try to impress your boss. You’ll want your spouse to be happy with you if doing something around the house. Do we put that same effort into our work for the Lord? An opportunity to do anything for Him is a great responsibility to do a great work. Do you put forth your greatest effort?
God bless you today! Bro. Josh Richardson
